What Is the Chlorine and Hydrochloric Acid Chart Used For?
In the laboratory, chlorine is prepared by warming manganese dioxide with concentrated hydrochloric acid: MnO2 + 4HCl → MnCl2 + Cl2 + 2H2O. The gas is bubbled through water to remove hydrogen chloride and through concentrated sulphuric acid to dry it, then collected by upward displacement of air, because it is denser than air. Chlorine is a greenish-yellow, choking and poisonous gas, so the preparation is carried out in a fume cupboard. On a large scale it comes from the electrolysis of brine, and it is used to disinfect drinking water and to make bleaching powder, PVC and many solvents.
Hydrogen chloride is prepared by heating common salt with concentrated sulphuric acid (NaCl + H2SO4 → NaHSO4 + HCl), dried with concentrated sulphuric acid and collected by upward displacement of air. The gas is extremely soluble, so to make hydrochloric acid it is led into water through an inverted funnel whose rim just touches the surface, which stops water being sucked back into the hot apparatus; the same solubility drives the classic fountain experiment. Industrially, hydrogen is burnt in chlorine and the hydrogen chloride formed is absorbed in water. These preparations belong to ICSE class 10 chemistry (study of compounds) and to inorganic chemistry at senior-secondary and college level. A wall chart keeps the reactions and precautions in view before and during a practical, and the washable lamination can be marked in class. The listing does not itemise the diagrams printed on the chart, so request a preview image if you need to check them.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units, each chart sold singly.
- Companion charts — Prep. of Sodium Hydroxide and Sodium Carbonate and Prep. of Sulphur Dioxide and Sulphuric Acid share the same format.
- Tender reference — include it if the purchase is for an institutional tender.
- Destination — country, port or city and delivery terms for the export quotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does this chart cover?
Its subject is the preparation of chlorine and of hydrogen chloride and hydrochloric acid. The listing does not itemise the diagrams, so ask for a preview image to see exactly what is printed.
How is chlorine made in a school laboratory?
By warming manganese dioxide with concentrated hydrochloric acid in a fume cupboard, then washing the gas with water, drying it with concentrated sulphuric acid and collecting it by upward displacement of air.
Why is an inverted funnel used to dissolve hydrogen chloride?
The gas dissolves so readily that water could be drawn back into the generating flask. A funnel resting just on the water surface breaks the suction and prevents this back-suction.
Which classes use it?
ICSE class 10 chemistry, where hydrogen chloride is a set compound, plus senior-secondary and college inorganic chemistry courses that cover the halogens.
What size and finish is the chart?
It is 58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), offset printed in full colour on 130 gsm coated art paper, laminated on both sides with 30 micron polyester film and fitted with plastic rollers, weighing 228 g.
What details does an export quotation need?
The quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF), packing or labelling requirements and any tender reference.
Who supplies this chart?
JLab — the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, Ambala, Haryana — supplies it and quotes directly.
Supplier
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The company supplies printed chemistry charts like this one in addition to its own laboratory apparatus for schools and colleges, which lets a school combine charts and practical equipment in one purchase; each chart is visually inspected before it is packed. JLab exports worldwide and can ship to buyers in every region — for example Lebanon in the Middle East, Sri Lanka in South Asia, Angola in Central Africa, Tonga in Oceania and Indonesia in Southeast Asia. For tenders, see the JLab lab tenders page.
Related Gas-Preparation and Industrial Chemistry Charts
- Prep. of Sodium Hydroxide and Sodium Carbonate — brine electrolysis, the large-scale source of chlorine.
- Prep. of Sulphur Dioxide and Sulphuric Acid — the acid used to prepare and dry hydrogen chloride.
- Prep. of Ammonia and Haber Process — another very soluble gas, also shown by a fountain experiment.
- Sodium Chloride Crystal — common salt, the starting material for hydrogen chloride.
