What Is the Crystal Lattices Chart Used For?

In a crystalline solid the atoms, ions or molecules are arranged in a pattern that repeats regularly in three dimensions. Representing each particle by a point gives a crystal lattice, and the smallest portion that builds the whole lattice when repeated in every direction is the unit cell. A unit cell is described by six parameters: the lengths of its three edges, a, b and c, and the three angles between them, α, β and γ. Different combinations of these give seven crystal systems — cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, hexagonal, trigonal (rhombohedral), monoclinic and triclinic — ranging from the cubic system, with all edges equal and all angles right angles, to the triclinic system, in which no edges or angles are equal.

A unit cell can be primitive, with particles only at its corners, or centred, with an extra particle at the body centre, at the centre of each face or at the centres of two opposite faces. Combining the centring types with the seven systems gives the fourteen Bravais lattices. Familiar examples are sodium chloride and copper in the cubic system, graphite and zinc oxide in the hexagonal system, rhombic sulphur and potassium nitrate in the orthorhombic system, calcite in the trigonal system and potassium dichromate in the triclinic system. These ideas belong to solid-state chemistry at senior-secondary and college level and to crystallography in physics, geology and materials-science courses, where a wall chart is a handy reference beside ball-and-stick models. The markable, washable lamination lets a teacher add sketches and notes during the lesson. The listing does not itemise the diagrams printed on the chart, so request a preview image if you need to check them.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units, each chart supplied individually.
  • Structure models — the Crystal Models Set builds diamond, graphite and sodium chloride structures to use alongside the chart.
  • Solid-state companions — Close Packed Structures and Sodium Chloride Crystal come in the same 58 x 90 cm format.
  • Destination — country, port or city and delivery terms for an export quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Crystal Lattices chart cover?
Its subject is crystal lattices, unit cells and crystal systems. The listing does not itemise the diagrams, so ask for a preview image to see exactly what is printed.

What is a unit cell?
The smallest repeating portion of a crystal lattice; stacking identical unit cells in all three directions reproduces the whole crystal. It is defined by three edge lengths and three angles.

What are the seven crystal systems?
Cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, hexagonal, trigonal (rhombohedral), monoclinic and triclinic, distinguished by the relationships between their edge lengths and angles.

What is a Bravais lattice?
One of the fourteen distinct three-dimensional lattices obtained by combining the seven crystal systems with primitive, body-centred, face-centred and end-centred unit cells.

Which courses use it?
Senior-secondary and college solid-state chemistry, and crystallography in physics, geology and materials-science courses.

What size is the chart and how is it finished?
58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), offset printed in full colour on 130 gsm coated art paper, laminated on both sides with 30 micron polyester film and fitted with plastic rollers; it weighs 228 g and rolls to 58 x 4 x 2 cm.

What should an export quotation request include?
The quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, packing or labelling instructions and any tender reference.

Who supplies this chart?
JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, Ambala, Haryana, supplies it and quotes directly.

Supplier

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. It supplies chemistry wall charts such as this one together with its own range of laboratory apparatus and models, so a department can order charts and structure models together; each chart is visually inspected before dispatch. The company is registered under CIN U29309HR2017PTC069123 and its GSTIN is 06AADCJ9848D1ZE. JLab exports worldwide and can ship to buyers in every region — for example Honduras in Central America and the Caribbean, Mexico in North America, Ivory Coast in West Africa, Turkmenistan in Central Asia and Botswana in Southern Africa. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
