What Is the Glass Collection Used For?

Most glass starts as melted sand (silica), and each type in this set shows what an added ingredient or process does. Soda glass, made with soda ash and limestone, is the everyday glass of windows and bottles; potash glass swaps sodium for potassium and softens at a higher temperature; lead crystal contains lead oxide, which raises the refractive index and gives decorative glassware its sparkle; and borosilicate glass, with boron oxide, expands very little on heating, so laboratory glassware made from it withstands sudden temperature changes. Optical glass is made highly uniform for lenses and prisms, and photochromic glass darkens in sunlight and clears again indoors, as in some spectacle lenses.

The last three show glass in engineering use: safety glass is toughened to break into small blunt pieces or laminated with a plastic layer that holds the fragments together, glass fibre is drawn into fine strands for insulation and fibreglass-reinforced plastics, and coloured glass takes its colour from metal oxides, such as cobalt oxide for blue. Teachers use the set in school chemistry and science lessons on materials and in polytechnic and engineering courses; handle the pieces carefully, as glass edges can be sharp.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Companion sets — plastics, fibres or metals and alloys, linked below, for a complete materials unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which types of glass are included?
Nine: soda, potash, lead crystal, borosilicate, optical, photochromic and safety glass, plus glass fibre and coloured glass, listed as typical contents.

How is borosilicate glass different from soda glass?
Borosilicate glass contains boron oxide and expands much less when heated, so it resists cracking from sudden temperature changes; that is why laboratory glassware is usually made from it, while soda glass is used for windows and bottles.

Who manufactures this collection?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) assembles it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, and quotes for it directly as the manufacturer.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an educational lab equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The glass collection is made up at JLab’s own works, not bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers order from the manufacturer itself, and every set is checked by eye before packing. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Gabon in Central Africa, Ivory Coast in West Africa, Papua New Guinea in Oceania, Botswana in Southern Africa and Jordan in the Middle East. For tender requirements, see the JLab lab tenders page.
