What Is the Directional Over Current Relay Testing Kit Used For?

On ring mains and parallel feeders, fault current can reach a section from either end, so a plain over current relay could trip a healthy feeder along with the faulty one. A directional over current relay adds a directional element that allows it to operate only for current flowing in its set direction, while the induction disc gives it an inverse time characteristic. The kit is used to examine how such a relay is built and to record its operating time against fault current.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a directional relay tell which way the current is flowing?
Its directional element compares the phase of the current with a reference quantity, normally the system voltage. The resulting torque acts one way for forward current and the opposite way for reverse current, so only a fault in the protected direction lets the relay go on to trip.

What is the reversing switch for?
It reverses the direction of the current fed to the relay, so its behaviour for current in one direction can be compared with its behaviour for current in the other.

How does it differ from the Earth Fault Relay Testing Kit?
This kit is built around a directional over current relay, where the earth fault kit uses an IDMT earth fault relay. This kit weighs about 40 kg; the earth fault kit about 30 kg.

What should an export enquiry include?
The number of kits, the destination country and port or city, the delivery terms you want (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or labelling instructions, and the tender reference where there is one.

Who manufactures the kit?
JLab — Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd — makes it at its Ambala works and handles the quotation directly.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a maker of electrical and electronics lab equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. This relay kit comes from JLab’s own works, not from a trading house, so colleges, dealers and importers buy it factory-direct and can return to the same maker for repeat orders. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Lithuania in Northern Europe, Nepal in South Asia, Botswana in Southern Africa, Tajikistan in Central Asia and Cyprus in Southern Europe. Tender details are on the JLab lab tenders page.
