What Is the Hand Held Homogenizer Used For?
A rotor-stator homogenizer breaks up a sample by mechanical shear. Inside the generator probe a fast-spinning rotor draws the liquid sample in and forces it out through the slots of the fixed outer stator; as the sample is drawn up and pushed through the stator again and again, the shearing is repeated until cells and tissue fragments are broken down and the mixture becomes uniform. The same action can disperse one liquid in another to form an emulsion or spread solids evenly to make a suspension.
Used as a tissue homogenizer, it prepares tissue and cell homogenates as a first step before extracting DNA, RNA or proteins, and it also makes emulsions and suspensions in biochemistry, microbiology, biotechnology and pharmacy labs at colleges, universities and research institutes. The short 5 mm and 7 mm probes suit work directly in microtubes, while the longer probes reach into 15 ml and 50 ml tubes and larger vessels. Because the probes are stainless steel and autoclavable, they can be sterilized between samples when cross-contamination matters.
