How Does It Compare with Other JLab Pipe Friction Set-ups?
| Set-up | Test pipes | Other details |
|---|---|---|
| This rig (EL-DSO-10354) | 4 pipes of different materials, same 15 mm inner diameter | Inlet and outlet valve on each line; measuring tank with piezometer tubes |
| Friction in Pipe Lines Apparatus | 2 GI pipes of half-inch and 1-inch diameter, connected in parallel; 1 m test section | Differential manometer; measuring tank 25 litres with piezometer; stainless steel sump 50 litres |
| Pipe Friction Apparatus | Three pipes connected in a common manifold; pressure tappings at 1 m | Differential manometer 300 mm long, with mercury; powder-coated mild steel measuring tank |
Choose this rig to compare four pipe materials at the same bore. The Friction in Pipe Lines Apparatus compares two GI pipes of different diameter, and the Pipe Friction Apparatus has three pipes on a common manifold.
What Is the Pipe Friction Rig Used For?
Water flowing along a pipe loses head through friction at the wall. The Darcy–Weisbach equation, hf = f (L/D) V²/2g, links that head loss to the pipe length L, bore D and mean velocity V through the friction factor f. Students set a flow, read the head loss on the manometer, find the discharge from the measuring tank and stopwatch, and calculate f for each pipe at several flow rates; plotting f against Reynolds number and comparing it with the Moody chart is the usual next step. The experiment is part of the fluid mechanics and hydraulics practicals in civil and mechanical engineering degree and diploma courses.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Number of rigs for the lab.
- Electrical supply — the 0.5 HP pump needs single-phase 220 V AC, 50 Hz.
- Companion flow benches, such as the venturimeter or Pitot tube set-ups linked below, which are separate items.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do all four pipes have the same inner diameter?
With the bore the same in every pipe, a change in friction factor between the pipes at the same flow comes from the pipe material and its wall roughness rather than from the diameter, which makes the comparison direct.
How is each pipe line selected?
Every pipe line has its own inlet and outlet valve — four of each — and the rig also has a bypass valve and a drain valve.
What accessories come with the rig?
Mercury for the manometer, a power cable and an instruction manual are the standard accessories.
What should an export enquiry include?
The number of rigs, the destination country and port or city, the delivery terms you prefer (for example FOB or CIF), packing or labelling instructions and any tender reference.
Who manufactures this rig?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its own works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an engineering and hydraulics lab equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The rig is fabricated at JLab’s own works and not bought from a trader, so engineering colleges, polytechnics, dealers and importers order it straight from the factory, each unit is inspected visually before dispatch, and repeat orders go back to the maker. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Taiwan in East Asia, Liberia in West Africa, Chad in Central Africa, Lesotho in Southern Africa and Papua New Guinea in Oceania. Tender details are on the JLab lab tenders page.
