What Is the Season Chart Used For?

Many pupils assume summer comes when the Earth is closer to the Sun, and a season chart helps correct that idea. The real cause is the tilt of the Earth’s axis, which keeps pointing the same way in space throughout the yearly orbit. The hemisphere leaning towards the Sun has a higher midday Sun, more direct rays and longer days, so it has summer, while the other hemisphere has winter; half a year later the situation is reversed. In fact the Earth is nearest the Sun in early January, during the northern winter. The June and December solstices bring the longest and shortest days, and at the March and September equinoxes day and night are nearly equal everywhere. At the June solstice the midday Sun is overhead at the Tropic of Cancer, which crosses India.

Indian classes can then move from this global picture to the seasons of India used by the India Meteorological Department — winter, the hot pre-monsoon season, the south-west monsoon and the post-monsoon or retreating monsoon. The chart’s own diagrams are not listed, so ask for a preview image if they must match your textbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the Season Chart and how is it finished?
It is 50 x 75 cm and laminated.

Which languages does it use?
English and Hindi, combined on the same chart.

What causes the seasons?
The tilt of the Earth’s axis as the Earth travels round the Sun, which changes how directly sunlight strikes each hemisphere and how long the days are — not the Earth’s distance from the Sun.

How is it different from the Earth and Its Motion Chart?
The Earth and Its Motion Chart is a larger chart on rotation and revolution in general; this laminated chart focuses on the seasons.
