Study of 4 Bit BCD Counter and Decimal to Binary Encoder using IC 7490 (code EL-SI-1174) is a digital electronics trainer panel for studying a 4-bit binary-coded decimal (BCD) counter built on the IC 7490 decade counter. A regulated DC supply, a 1 Hz clock pulse and four output indicators are built in, and the circuit diagram is printed on the panel. It is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) at its works in Ambala, India.

What Is the IC 7490 BCD Counter Trainer Used For?
The IC 7490 is a decade counter: it contains a divide-by-two stage and a divide-by-five stage, and when the two are linked it counts pulses from zero to nine in binary-coded decimal, returning to zero on the tenth pulse. The slow 1 Hz clock steps the counter so students can watch each count on the four output indicators, one per BCD bit, and write down the truth table. Decade counters like this form the counting stages of digital clocks and frequency counters, so the panel suits digital electronics practicals in B.Sc. physics and electronics courses and in polytechnic and ITI labs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the clock only 1 Hz?
One pulse a second is slow enough for students to see each state of the counter and record it in the truth table.
How is it different from the NAND gate version?
This panel counts clock pulses with a dedicated counter IC. The NAND gate version builds decimal-to-binary encoding from basic gates, with 10 logic inputs selected by SPDT switches; both show the result on four output indicators.
Who manufactures this trainer?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) builds it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, and quotes for it directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian maker of electronics trainers and laboratory instruments, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The trainer comes from JLab’s own works, not from a trader, so colleges, institutes, dealers and importers order it factory-direct and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to every region — Guinea in West Africa, New Zealand in Oceania, Argentina in South America, Hungary in Eastern Europe and North Macedonia in Southern Europe, for example. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
