Null Detector

Product Code : EL-SI-8083
Jlab Export is a leading Null Detector Manufacturer, and suppliers in India

Null Detector (code EL-SI-8083) is a meter-reading balance indicator for AC bridges, designed to be used in place of the headphone traditionally used to find the null point. A solid-state amplifier drives an output stage with meter indication, housed in a metal cabinet with Duco paint and an aluminium front panel. It is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) at its works in Ambala, India.

What Is the Null Detector Used For?

An AC bridge is balanced when no signal appears between its two detector points, so the student needs something that shows how close the bridge is to that null. A headphone does it by ear — the tone fades as balance approaches — but judging the faintest sound is subjective and hard in a busy lab. A null detector amplifies the small out-of-balance signal and shows it on a meter, so the arms are adjusted until the reading is at its lowest, and the teacher can see the same reading. It is connected across the detector terminals of bridges such as the Anderson, Maxwell, Owen, Hay, De Sauty and Wien bridges in B.Sc. physics and electrical measurement practicals, while an oscillator drives the source terminals. Keep the cabinet dry and away from strong magnetic fields and heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a null detector do in an AC bridge?
It shows how far the bridge is from balance. The out-of-balance signal is amplified and read on a meter, and the bridge is balanced when the reading is at its minimum.

Can it replace a headphone?
Yes. The listing states that it is designed for use with AC bridges in place of a headphone. A meter reading is easier to judge than a fading tone and can be seen by everyone at the bench.

Are its sensitivity and supply voltage stated?
No. The listing describes the solid-state amplifier, meter output and cabinet only. Ask JLab for the sensitivity, frequency range and supply details of the unit you are quoted, and tell us your mains voltage.

Who manufactures this null detector?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an electronic and physics lab instruments manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The null detector is built in JLab’s own works rather than sourced from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers buy factory-direct, each detector is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region, including for example Myanmar in Southeast Asia, Brazil in South America, Eswatini in Southern Africa, the UAE in the Middle East and El Salvador in Central America and the Caribbean. Tender buyers will find details on the JLab lab tenders page.

Sources, Bridges and Alternatives

  • Bridge Oscillator — a fixed-frequency, pure sine-wave source to drive the bridge.
  • Head Phone — flexible headphones with high-resistance receivers, the traditional detector this unit replaces.
  • DE Sauty Bridge — an AC bridge for comparing the capacitance of two capacitors.
  • Self Inductance Bridge — a bridge for finding the self-inductance of a coil.
  • Oscilloscope — for viewing the bridge output waveform as well as its amplitude.
