Workshop Practice for Panel Cleaning

In a furniture or carpentry workshop, students cut panels to size on the Sliding Panel Saw Machine. Next they bring them to an even thickness on the Combination Surface Planer and Thicknesser. Each panel then passes through this machine before gluing, laminating or painting. Dust left on a face spoils the bond and the finish.

Before feeding, students check every piece with a Steel Rule against the limits of 30 to 50 mm thick and at least 350 mm long. They feed the panels in a steady line, inspect the cleaned faces, and set aside any piece that falls outside the range for cleaning by hand.

Can it be used instead of sanding?
No. Its job is to clean the surface, not to remove wood the way a planer or sander does. Run panels through it after planing or sanding, when the face is already flat and smooth, to clear the dust before the next step.

How is the machine kept in working order?
Isolate the power before any cleaning or adjustment. Clear chips and wood fibres from the brushes and the conveyor belt at the end of each session. Worn or flattened bristles leave dust behind and should be replaced.
