What Is the Hele-Shaw Apparatus Used For?
The Hele-Shaw method uses slow, viscous flow through a very narrow gap. That flow stays laminar, and its streamlines closely match those of ideal two-dimensional flow, so a model placed in the flow shows how the stream divides and rejoins around it. Swapping between the bluff shapes and the aerofoil lets students compare how shape changes the flow pattern.
