What Is the D.C. Shunt Motor Set Used For?
In a D.C. shunt motor the field winding is connected in parallel with the armature, so on a steady supply the field current stays fixed and the speed falls only a little as the load increases. That near-constant speed makes the shunt motor the usual machine for speed-control and load-characteristic experiments in an electric machines lab.

Why does a D.C. shunt motor need a starter?
At standstill there is no back EMF, so only the small armature resistance would limit the current. A three-point starter puts resistance in series with the armature while the motor runs up to speed and cuts it out in steps, and it also protects against the field circuit opening.
What does the field regulator do?
It sets the current in the shunt field winding. On this set it is there to keep the motor at its rated speed when fully loaded; reducing the field current raises the speed of a shunt motor.
What does S.P.D.P. mean on the motor?
Screen protected drip proof: the ventilation openings are covered by screens and the enclosure keeps out water falling from above, while cooling air can still pass through the machine.
