R-600a is isobutane, a hydrocarbon refrigerant used in domestic refrigerators and freezers and in some small commercial cabinets. Refrigeration Lab Practicals with R-600a

Keep the cylinder upright and secured in a cool, ventilated store, away from heat, flames and electrical switches. Charge only in a ventilated room with no ignition sources nearby. Recover isobutane with a machine made for flammable gases, such as the Combustible Gas Recovery Machine. An empty non-refillable cylinder is never refilled.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can R-600a replace the refrigerant in an older refrigerator?
Not as a simple swap. It is flammable and runs at different pressures, so it belongs only in compressors and systems designed for it. Check the compressor label and the rating plate before charging.
Should R-600a be charged as liquid or vapour?
Either works. Isobutane is a single compound, not a blend, so liquid and vapour from the cylinder have the same make-up. Small domestic systems are charged slowly by weight, with the scale watched rather than the gauges.
Why choose the 7 kg cylinder rather than small cans?
The cylinder suits a lab or workshop that charges many systems over a term. It needs a charging scale with enough capacity and a hose to the manifold. A small can is handier for a single repair.
Which leak detector works with R-600a?
Use an electronic detector made for hydrocarbons, or bubble solution on a circuit pressurised with nitrogen. Some detectors built only for HFC refrigerants give no reading on isobutane, so check the sensor type first.
