What Is the Solar and Lunar Eclipse Chart Used For?
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and the Earth and its shadow falls on part of the Earth, so it can occur only at new moon. Where the dark central shadow, the umbra, reaches the ground the eclipse is total; under the lighter penumbra it is partial; and when the Moon is near its farthest point from the Earth it looks too small to cover the Sun, leaving a bright ring — an annular eclipse. A lunar eclipse is the reverse line-up: the Earth lies between the Sun and the Moon, its shadow falls on the Moon, and the event can happen only at full moon and is visible from the whole night side of the planet. In a total lunar eclipse the Moon often turns coppery red, because sunlight bent through the Earth’s atmosphere still reaches it. Eclipses do not happen every month because the Moon’s orbit is tilted slightly against the Earth’s.
The chart is also a starting point for safety teaching before a solar eclipse: never look at the Sun directly or through sunglasses, binoculars or a telescope, and watch it only through proper solar filters or by pinhole projection. The listing does not itemise the printed diagrams, so ask for a preview image if you need to match a textbook figure.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units.
- Companion chart — the Phases of the Moon chart explains the new-moon and full-moon positions that eclipses depend on.
- Demonstration model — a tellurium or geared Sun–Earth–Moon model lets students recreate the line-up themselves.
- Delivery — destination country and city, with FOB or CIF terms for export orders.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the chart cover both kinds of eclipse?
Its title names both solar and lunar eclipses. The listing does not describe the individual diagrams, so ask JLab for a preview before ordering if the layout matters.
What size is it, and in which language?
It is 50 x 75 cm and laminated, with English and Hindi combined on one sheet.
Why don’t eclipses happen every month?
Because the Moon’s orbit is tilted slightly to the Earth’s orbit round the Sun. At most new and full moons the Moon passes a little above or below the line joining the Sun and the Earth, so no shadow falls.
Which models can demonstrate eclipses alongside the chart?
The geared Sun-Earth-Moon Model and the Solar System Model are both listed for showing eclipses, and the Tellurium Earth Moon Sun Model shows the relative movements of the three bodies. They are separate items and can be quoted with the chart.
Who manufactures the chart?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a maker of teaching charts, astronomy models and educational lab equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The chart is produced at the company’s own works, not bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers get supply direct from the factory, a visual check of each chart before packing, and repeat orders from the original manufacturer. JLab is registered under CIN U29309HR2017PTC069123 and also holds MSME Udyam registration UDYAM-HR-01-0003849 (manufacturing enterprise). It exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Libya in North Africa, Thailand in Southeast Asia, Japan in East Asia, Mali in West Africa and Lesotho in Southern Africa. Tender buyers can refer to the JLab lab tenders page.
