Why Use a Regulated Supply for Potentiometer Experiments?
A potentiometer gives correct results only while the current through its wire stays constant, because the balancing length depends on a steady fall of potential per centimetre. A dry cell or accumulator slowly loses voltage as it discharges, so the balance point drifts during a long practical; a regulated supply holds its set output, which keeps readings consistent from one student group to the next. Set the output so that the potential difference across the whole wire is larger than the emf you want to balance, otherwise no balance point can be found, and use a rheostat in series to fine-tune the current. Open the key between readings so the wire does not warm up.
Frequently Asked Questions
What output does it give?
It is a solid-state regulated supply, variable from 0 to 5 V at 1 A.
Which equipment is it meant for?
It is designed for JLab’s potentiometer experiments, such as the multi-wire, single-wire and dial-pattern potentiometers linked below, where it replaces the driver cell.
Are connecting leads included?
Yes, the power supply is supplied with leads. Rheostats, keys and galvanometers are separate items.
Who manufactures it?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) makes the stabilized power supply at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of physics and electrical lab instruments, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The supply is built in JLab’s own works alongside the potentiometers it is designed to drive, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers can order the whole set-up from one maker; each unit is visually inspected before dispatch. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — Finland in Northern Europe, Niger in West Africa, Gabon in Central Africa, Argentina in South America and France in Western Europe are examples. Tender supply is covered on the JLab lab tenders page.
