What Is the Standard Cell Used For?

A potentiometer measures voltage by comparison, so before use it is standardised against a known e.m.f. The standard cell is connected through a sensitive galvanometer to the potentiometer, and the working current is adjusted with a rheostat until the balance point matches the cell’s e.m.f.; from then on every balance reading can be converted directly into volts for voltmeter calibration, thermocouple e.m.f. or other voltage measurements. A standard cell is a reference, not a power source, so draw as little current from it as possible: connect it through a high resistance or a protective key, close the key only briefly near balance, never short its terminals and do not check it with an ordinary moving-coil voltmeter. Use it within the listed 10 °C to 40 °C range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What e.m.f. does the standard cell give?
The listing gives 1.0816 volts, accurate between 10 °C and 40 °C. Confirm the exact e.m.f. of the unit you are quoted with JLab, as it is the value you will standardise against.

What is it used for?
Mainly for standardising potentiometers. The listing also names instrument calibration, temperature and voltage measurement and pH testing as applications for this stable voltage reference.

How should it be connected?
Through a galvanometer at the null point, with a high resistance or protective key in series, so that almost no current is drawn from the cell.

Who manufactures the standard cell?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of electrical measurement and physics lab instruments in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The standard cell is made at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers order direct from the maker, and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — Turkmenistan in Central Asia, Bangladesh in South Asia, Belize in Central America and the Caribbean, France in Western Europe and Tanzania in East Africa are examples. For tenders, see the JLab lab tenders page.
