What Is the Anopheles Head Model Used For?
The sexes of Anopheles can be told apart by the head alone. The male has bushy, feather-like antennae, which pick up the sound of a female’s wingbeat, and its palps — about as long as the proboscis — swell into a club at the tip. The female has sparsely haired antennae and slender palps that also run the full length of the proboscis. Only the female bites: she needs blood to develop her eggs, while the male feeds on nectar and plant juices.
That difference is why the female Anopheles alone carries Plasmodium, the malaria parasite, as taught in class 12 biology; class 11 lists Anopheles among the insect vectors. The long palps of the female also separate Anopheles from Culex, whose females have short palps. The model serves school biology, college zoology and entomology practicals, and malaria-awareness training.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do the male and female Anopheles heads differ?
The male has bushy antennae and club-tipped palps; the female has sparsely haired antennae and slender palps. In both, the palps are about as long as the proboscis.
Why does only the female mosquito transmit malaria?
Only females take blood meals, so only they can pick up malaria parasites from one person and pass them to another. Males feed on plant juices.
Who manufactures the model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab — Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd — is an Indian manufacturer of entomology, zoology and biology teaching models, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. It makes this Anopheles head model at its own works rather than reselling stock from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy from the manufacturer and every model is checked by eye before dispatch. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example the Dominican Republic in Central America and the Caribbean, Tonga in Oceania, Eswatini in Southern Africa, Malta in Southern Europe and Mexico in North America.
