What Is the BH Curve Apparatus Used For?

When a ferromagnetic material is taken through a full cycle of magnetisation, its flux density B lags behind the magnetising field H and traces a closed loop. The loop shows the saturation level, the retentivity (the B left when H returns to zero) and the coercivity (the reverse H needed to bring B back to zero), and its area represents the energy lost as heat in each cycle — the hysteresis loss. Soft iron gives a narrow loop and suits transformer and motor cores; hard steel gives a wide loop and suits permanent magnets. Comparing different materials on the same set-up makes these differences visible at a glance.

In the usual CRO method, a voltage proportional to H, taken from the magnetising current, drives the X input and a voltage proportional to B, taken from an integrating network on the secondary side, drives the Y input, so the oscilloscope in X–Y mode draws the loop live. The band-switched supply lets students raise the drive in steps and watch the loop grow towards saturation, and the external-inductance terminals allow other coils or samples to be tested. The apparatus serves B.Sc. physics, engineering physics and electrical-materials labs.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Sample materials — the name refers to different materials, but the listing does not name them; ask JLab which samples are supplied.
  • Oscilloscope — state whether the listed 10 MHz C.R.O. should be quoted with the apparatus, or if you will use your own.
  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the BH curve apparatus show?
The hysteresis loop of a magnetic material, from which saturation, retentivity, coercivity and the relative hysteresis loss can be read and compared between materials.

What supply does it use?
A built-in AC power supply of 3–15 V AC whose output is selected with a band switch, so the magnetising drive can be changed in steps.

Is an oscilloscope included?
The listing names a 10 MHz C.R.O., type TE-97, alongside the apparatus but does not say whether it is part of the set. Ask JLab to confirm and to quote it if you need one.

Can other coils or samples be tested?
Yes, there is provision for connecting an external inductance, and the input and output connections are on terminals.

How does it differ from the Universal B-H Curve Tracer?
The universal tracer is described as tracing the B–H loop of materials of any shape without winding primary and secondary coils on the sample. This apparatus works with its own panel circuit, band-switched supply and external-inductance terminals.

Who manufactures this apparatus?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of physics, electrical and engineering lab equipment, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The BH curve apparatus is built at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so universities, engineering colleges, dealers and importers buy it factory-direct; every unit is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Mexico in North America, Guinea in West Africa, the Maldives in South Asia, Trinidad and Tobago in Central America and the Caribbean, and Indonesia in Southeast Asia. Tender buyers can refer to the JLab lab tenders page.
