What Is the Intestinal T.B. Model Used For?
Intestinal tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria can reach the bowel when a person with active lung TB swallows infected sputum, through the bloodstream, or — in the past especially — through unpasteurised milk carrying the bovine strain. The disease most often settles in the ileocaecal region, where the small intestine joins the large intestine and lymphoid tissue is plentiful. There it can cause ulcers that tend to run around the bowel wall, thickening of the wall and narrowing that may block the bowel.
Patients typically have abdominal pain, fever, weight loss and a change in bowel habit, and the picture can resemble Crohn’s disease. Like lung TB, it is curable with a full course of anti-TB drugs. A model lets students study the abdominal form of TB alongside the chest models in the same series.
