What Is This Power Supply Used For?
In Millikan’s oil drop experiment, tiny charged oil drops drift between two horizontal condenser plates and are watched through a microscope. Raising the plate voltage until the electric force on a drop balances its weight, or timing the drop as it rises and falls, lets students work out the charge it carries and see that every charge is a whole multiple of the electronic charge, e. The continuously variable plate voltage lets a drop be held still with fine adjustments, and the 6 V output lights the drops for viewing. Because the plate supply reaches a few hundred volts, switch the unit off before changing any connection to the plates.
