Voltage Commutated Thyristorised Chopper (code EL-PET-1439) is a power electronics training board for studying a step-down chopper that uses thyristors as its switches and voltage commutation to turn them off. Two SCRs with two 1:1:1 pulse transformers, a freewheeling diode, inductors and a 12 V, 6 W bulb are built into the panel. Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) manufactures this chopper trainer at its works in Ambala, India.

How Does It Compare with the JLab MOSFET Chopper?
| Board | Switching device | Built-in DC supplies | Pulse and drive circuit |
|---|---|---|---|
| This board (EL-PET-1439) | Two SCRs, voltage commutated | ±12 V at 100 mA; 5 V at 100 mA | UJT relaxation oscillator, op-amp, timer and hex inverter gate ICs, two NPN transistors, two 1:1:1 pulse transformers |
| DC Step Down Mosfet Chopper | MOSFET | ±12 V at 100 mA; 20 V at 1 A | IC for triangular pulse generation, IC to drive the MOSFET, two potentiometers for frequency and duty cycle |
Both are step-down DC choppers that need a 20 MHz dual trace oscilloscope. Choose this board when the course deals with thyristor choppers and how a conducting SCR is commutated; the MOSFET board covers the same step-down function with a transistor switch that turns off from its gate drive.
What Is the Thyristorised Chopper Used For?
A step-down chopper switches a fixed DC supply on and off at high speed so that the load sees a lower average voltage, set by the fraction of each cycle for which the switch is on. An SCR cannot be turned off from its gate once it conducts on DC, so a thyristor chopper needs a commutation circuit; in voltage commutation a charged capacitor is switched across the conducting SCR to reverse-bias it. Science and engineering students use this power electronics trainer to examine that switching and commutation sequence and the role of the freewheeling diode, following the waveforms at the panel terminals with an oscilloscope.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of chopper boards needed.
- Oscilloscope — whether one should be quoted with the boards.
- Companion boards — for example the MOSFET chopper or the forced commutation board, if the same course uses them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the output of a step-down chopper?
An average DC voltage lower than the supply. For an ideal step-down chopper the average output equals the supply voltage multiplied by the duty ratio, the on-time divided by the total period of each cycle.
What does the freewheeling diode do?
When the chopper switch turns off, the current in an inductive load cannot stop instantly. A freewheeling diode connected across the load gives that current a closed path, so the load current keeps flowing through the diode and no high voltage spike appears across the switch.
Why is it called voltage commutated?
Because the conducting thyristor is turned off by applying a reverse voltage across it from a charged capacitor, rather than by letting its current fall to zero on its own.
What other apparatus is needed with the chopper board?
A 20 MHz dual trace cathode ray oscilloscope, used unearthed. JLab sells a Dual Trace Oscilloscope separately, and it can go on the same enquiry.
How is the board packed for shipping?
Each board is packed in a corrugated box for dispatch.
What information does an export quotation need?
The number of boards, the destination country and port or city, the preferred delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, any packing or labelling requirements and the tender reference where applicable.
Who manufactures the Voltage Commutated Thyristorised Chopper?
JLab, trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a maker of engineering lab equipment in India whose range includes power electronics trainers such as this chopper. The company was incorporated in 2017 and is based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Each board is built at JLab’s own works rather than bought in, so colleges, institutes, dealers and importers deal directly with the manufacturer, every board is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat supplies come from the same works. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example the Maldives in South Asia, Uruguay in South America, Turkey in the Middle East, Niger in West Africa and Mongolia in East Asia. The JLab lab tenders page covers tender enquiries.
