What Is the IC 555 Bistable Trainer Used For?
A bistable multivibrator has two stable states and stays in either one until it is told to change, so it behaves as a set–reset latch. In the 555 version, taking the trigger input below one-third of the supply sets the output high, and taking the threshold input above two-thirds, or pulling the reset input low, returns it low; no timing capacitor is needed for the latching action. Pressing the front-panel switches, students apply set and reset pulses, record the output state each time and build the truth table.
