What Is the Storm and Ocean Current Chart Used For?

Storms and ocean currents both show how the Sun’s heat is moved around the planet. A tropical cyclone forms over warm sea water: warm, moist air rises, a deep low-pressure centre develops, and winds spiral in towards it — anticlockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern — around a calm eye. The same kind of storm is called a cyclone in the Indian Ocean, a hurricane in the Atlantic and a typhoon in the western Pacific. Ocean currents are driven mainly by the planetary winds and by differences in the temperature and saltiness of sea water, and the Earth’s rotation deflects them. Warm currents such as the Gulf Stream carry heat from the tropics towards the poles, while cold currents such as the Labrador Current flow towards the equator; where those two meet off Newfoundland, fog and rich fishing grounds result.

For Indian classrooms the chart also supports the point that surface currents in the north Indian Ocean reverse with the monsoon. It is used in middle-school geography and in class 11 physical geography on the movements of ocean water. The panels are not listed, so check a preview image if specific currents or storm diagrams are required.
